In the early hours hearing of 26 February, the Delhi High Court directed the police to ensure safe passage for those injured in the communal violence erupted in northeast Delhi over the Citizenship Amendment Act, to government hospitals and provide them with emergency treatment with better facilities.
After receiving a call from an advocate Suroor Mander, citing the dire circumstances under which the injured victims were unable to be removed from a small hospital to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, the Delhi High Court held its special hearing at 12.30 AM today, at the residence of Justice S Muralidhar, under the orders of senior-most Judge GS Sistani.
The bench headed by Justices S Muralidhar and Anup J Bhambhani directed the Delhi Police to ensure the safe passage of about 22 victims stuck in a fairly small hospital in northeast Delhi to a government hospital with better facilities, by deploying all resources at its command and on the strength of this order as well as to make sure they receive immediate emergency treatment. The hearing which was also attended by Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police Alok Kumar and Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime) Rajesh Deo, confirmed that they were in the process of evacuating the injured from the Al Hind Hospital in New Mustafabad to the nearest hospitals with better facilities.
“The court at this stage is primarily concerned with ensuring the safety of the lives of the injured and provide immediate medical attention. The court accordingly directs Delhi Police to ensure such safe passage by deploying all the resources at its command and on the strength of this order and to ensure that apart from the safe passage, the injured victims receive immediate emergency treatment, if not at the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital then at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital or Maulana Azad or any other government hospital” stated the order.
Further, the bench called for a status report of compliance, including information about the injured victims and the treatment offered to them in the next hearing on 26 February at 2:15 PM.
