The Allahabad High Court through its judgment dated 7 January directed the National Human Rights Commission to investigate the alleged police violence in AMU, during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests.
The two-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Govind Mathur, while hearing a PIL filed by one Mohammad Aman Khan seeking a judicial inquiry by a ‘Court Monitored Committee’ against the police action during the anti-CAA protest directed to complete the investigation within 5 weeks.
The petitioner alleged that on 13 December, while the students were peacefully protesting, the Para Military Force and the State Police for no valid reasons initiated Lathi charge, fired tear gas, rubber bullets, and pellets on the students.
Earlier, on 17 December 2019, the SC refused to entertain any pleas seeking an inquiry into the police actions during the anti-CAA protests and asked the petitioners to approach their respective High Courts with regards to the probe into police atrocities. Thus, the petitioner approached Allahabad HC seeking an immediate probe into the matter.
