Marking a huge success in the Kanpur encounter case, wanted gangster Vikas Dubey has finally been arrested in Ujjain’s Mahakal temple on Thursday. The accused will be handed over to the UP police after Ujjain local court’s approval for transit remand.

“Main Vikas Dubey hoon, Kanpur wall (I am Vikas Dubey from Kanpur),” shouted Vikas Dubey while police was taking him to the police van.

There are different stories coming out of the incident. “Vikas Dubey was going to Ujjain Mahakal temple when he was identified by security personnel. Police were informed and he confessed his identity after being pushed for it. He has been apprehended by the police and his interrogation is underway,” said Ujjain Collector Ashish Singh. Madhya Pradesh police have communicated the same thing to the media houses.

While sources close to the development in the matter claimed that Vikas Dubey has surrendered fearing being killed in an encounter. They claimed that while Dubey has visited the Mahakal temple in Ujjain, he approached the security personnel to inform the police about him.

UP police was on high alert and was chasing the accused. Vikas Dubey was spotted in a Faridabad hotel on Wednesday morning. But he had escaped before the police reached the hotel. Prabhat Mishra who was arrested from the hotel was shot dead after he tried to escape from the police custody.

A police inspector in charge of the Vikas Dubey’s village has also been arrested over the allegations that he was involved in the tipping of the gangster and has continuously helped him escape the law.

Two of the close aides of Vikas Dubey, Prabhat Mishra and Praveen Dubey, were killed in separate encounters on Thursday morning. One another accomplice, Amar Dubey was gunned down on Wednesday. Five people have been encountered so far after the ambush.

The accused was on run from the past 6 days after the planned ambush in his village Bikru, Kanpur. Eight cops were killed in the encounter and many others were injured including 7 civilians. The state police has launched a massive hunt against the gangster and a bounty of Rs 5 lakh was raised on him.

A local politician, Vikas Dubey has a huge criminal history in which 60 criminal cases have been registered against him including murder, kidnapping, extortion, and rioting. He is facing the charges of murdering a BJP minister Santosh Shukla in Shivli police station in 2001 which were still not proved as the prime witnesses, police had turned hostile.
