North Korea has always been hitting headlines for its punishments and bans. This time, the country’s citizens are banned from laughing for the coming 11 days to mark the 10th anniversary of former Supreme Leader Kim Jong Il.

A resident from the border city of Sinuiju told Radio Free Asia that grocery shopping will remain banned on the death anniversary. December 17, marks the 10th anniversary of his death.

The citizens will not be allowed to laugh, consume alcohol, work out, celebrate, and engage in leisure activities. The citizens are not even allowed to perform funeral rites.

“In the past many people who were caught drinking or being intoxicated during the mourning period were arrested and treated as ideological criminals. They were taken away and never seen again,” said a citizen.
