The Supreme Court on 17 December agreed to hear the plea, seeking a CBI or a court-monitored SIT probe into the police violence during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.

The Supreme court heard a petition filed by Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, to stop the alleged police atrocities on students holding protests against the CAA at Jamia Millia Islamia University and Aligarh Muslim University. The plea was listed in the urgent hearing before the Chief Justice SA Bobde and compelled a probe by the CBI or the SIT under the supervision of the court.

“We cannot take the jurisdiction of all the courts. Incidents and circumstances everywhere can be different. Such cases should first go to the High Court. We are not saying that the issue raised by you is not important. You can try your luck tomorrow,” stated the Supreme Court bench.

After the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 received Presidential consent on 12 December, the North-Eastern states including Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and the other neighboring states have been witnessing uncontrolled protests which by time extended all over the country including Delhi. On Sunday a group of protestors torched public buses and clashed with police in the Jamia Nagar area of Delhi. Police started firing tear gas shells and detained over 50 students.
