Supreme Court has refused to stay prosecution and pass interim orders in the Sharjeel Imam sedition case as the court has not received replies from all the 5 states. The bench had listed the matter for hearing after three weeks.
Senior Advocate Sidharth Dave appearing for the petitioner Sharjeel Imam has moved a petition before apex court seeking the clubbing of all the five FIRs filed against him and transfer his case and probe to the national capital.
Delhi and Uttar Pradesh government had already filed a counter-affidavit in response to his plea but the other three states, Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh has not filed it yet. The bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan and V Ramasubramanian had directed the three states to file the affidavit within two weeks.
JNU student Sharjeel Imam was arrested on January 28 from Bihar’s Jelanabad in context to his inflammatory speeches given during CAA protests in two different places including Delhi and Aligarh. Delhi police have booked him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA)
