A woman (bride-to-be) has filed an FIR against BJD MLA Bijay Shankar Das after he failed to turn up for his own wedding. The incident took place in Odisha.

A cheating case has been filed at the Jagatsinghpur Sadar police station against Bijay who is a legislator of Tirtol.

He has been booked under Section 420 (cheating), Section 195A (threatening any person to give false evidence), Section 294 (obscene acts and songs), Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), Section 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), Section 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) and Section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and other relevant provision of Indian Penal Code.

Reportedly, the couple had applied for the marriage registration in the registrar’s office on May 17. The woman reached the registrar’s office after stipulated 30 days. But Bijay didn’t show up.

30-year-old Bijay Das said that he has not denied getting married to her. “Another 60 days are there for the registration of the marriage. Therefore, I did not turn up. I was not informed by her or anyone else to go to the marriage registrar’s office,” he said.

In the complaint, the woman had stated that they were in a relationship for the last three years and Bijay had promised to marry her on the scheduled date.

“But unfortunately, his brother and other family members are threatening me. He did not keep his promise and he is not responding to my phone calls,” she said.

Meanwhile, opposition parties including BJP and Congress have demanded a fair investigation into the allegations.

It is a habit of the ruling party to shield its MLAs. We demand a neutral investigation,” stated Odisha BJP General Secretary Prithiwiraj Harichandan.
