After a video of a woman being forced to carry her husband on her shoulders went viral on social media, Jhabua police has arrested the man and efforts are underway to nab the other accused.

On Wednesday a video surfaced on the internet and was highly condemned in which a woman was forced to carry her husband on shoulders over the suspicion of an extramarital affair in full public glare. In the video, villagers can be seen walking with sticks and heckling her. The woman in that five-minute video kept struggling to walk and trying to get the man off her shoulders, but villagers have beaten her with sticks.

“This incident is of Chhapri Ranwas village. The victim’s own family members misbehaved with her. The police team reached the spot after getting the information. Cases have been filed against the accused under tough sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” stated Jhabua SP Ashutosh Gupta.

The man and other accused are booked under Section 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), Section 355 (Assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour person, otherwise than on grave provocation), Section 147 (rioting), Section 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), Section 294 (Obscene acts and songs) and Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Various such incidents were reported in Madhya Pradesh earlier as well. As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data released on 21 October, 2019, Madhya Pradesh was identified as the worst place for women and also reported the highest domestic violence cases against women.

“In 2019, a total of 616 cases were recorded in the entire country under the Domestic Violence Act, 2005. The act was meant to provide effective protection of the rights of women. Of the total cases, 241 were registered in Madhya Pradesh in 2017,” said the report.
