President Ram Nath Kovind today has rejected the mercy petition filed by one of the four convicts, Mukesh in the Nirbhaya gangrape case. As per sources, the Rashtrapati Bhavan has communicated the President’s decision to the Union Home Ministry. Earlier today, the Ministry of Home Affairs had forwarded the mercy petition of the convict to the President, recommending its rejection.
However, the lawyer representing Mukesh said that they have not received any communication on the decision of the President.
“We do not know if the same has been communicated to Mukesh in jail or not. We will find out at 3 pm in Patiala House court,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi made an appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating “you came to power in 2014 promising safety of women, so please hang them on January 22.”
The four convicts Mukesh Singh (32), Vinay Sharma (26), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan Gupta (25) were scheduled to be hanged on 22 January at 7 AM in Tihar Jail.
