Delhi police have arrested Punjabi actor and singer Deep Sidhu who was one of the main accused in the January 26 Red Fort violence. Delhi special cell unit nabbed him in the Zirakpur area between Chandigarh and Ambala on Tuesday.
The police had announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for providing the information about the whereabouts of the Punjabi actor.
The actor-activist was escaping the arrest. He was making videos which he sent to one of his friends from California. She was uploading the videos from Deep Sidhu’s Facebook account.
An FIR was registered against Deep Sidhu and gangster Lakka Sadana. The FIR alleged that Deep Sidhu was present at Red Fort when a religious flag and a farmer flag was hoisted at a flagpole at the historic monument which led to a huge outrage in the country.
He was accused of misleading the farmers and fueling the chaos by defying the agreed routes for the Kisan Tractor Rally and forcing their way into Red Fort.
The farmers’ body had also accused him of defaming the peaceful agitation of farmers and derailing the protests while terming him as a “traitor”.
The actor also hit back the farmers in the videos shared from his Facebook account saying, “If I’m being labeled a gaddar (traitor), then all farmer leaders are gaddars.”
Delhi police had filed 44 cases in connection to the Red Fort violence that took place on Republic Day during the Farmers’ Tractor Parade. Several farmer leaders have been named in the FIRs and 122 people have been arrested so far.
